WELCOME TO ART EDUCATION!
The Department of Art Education offers programs of study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels focusing on learning and teaching in the visual arts.
The links below will provide you with detailed information about each of our programs.
Undergraduate Programs
At the Undergraduate level, two teacher preparation programs, the BFA Major and the BFA Specialization programs, emphasize the student’s development as artist, researcher, and professional.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts Major (three years) prepares students for teaching and related careers in community and cultural organizations.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts Specialization (four years) prepares students for provincial teacher certification (at both elementary and secondary grade levels) in visual arts.
Employment prospects in public school teaching should continue to be very good over the next several years, as Quebec and several other Canadian provinces continue to experience a shortage of certified teachers in most subject areas.

Graduate Programs
The Master of/ Magisteriate in Arts (Art Education) is designed to help students develop a critical understanding of the field of art education, and introduces them to past and current trends, as well as to theories and practices that influence the teaching of visual arts. Students engage in the program of study best suited to their particular academic and professional goals by choosing either the Thesis Option or the Courses Option. Graduates go on to a wide range of professional positions in schools, museums and cultural services.
The Doctor of/Doctorate in Philosophy in Art Education, the only one of its kind in Canada, is designed to offer students advanced study and research training in the teaching of visual arts. Students develop their own research direction in concert with the research and teaching expertise of the graduate faculty.
